| ![]() ![]() Among the massive forts and imposing palaces of the city, Jal Mahal or the Water Palace is another testimony to the lavish and exorbitant way of living of the Maharajas of Jaipur. The palace was built as a summer resort and pleasure spot by Sawai Pratap Singh in the year1799. The Jal Mahal palace, an intrinsic example of Indo-Mughal architecture, stands like a vigilante of peace in the serene and quiescent waters of Man Sagar Lake which is in turn nestled amongst the Nahargarh hills. It is one of the finest and most exotic pieces of Rajput architecture reflecting the technical excellence and knowledge of the builders of those times. Built as a pleasure palace for the imperial family, the palace is known for its magnificent architecture and erudite design. It was used for the royal duck shooting parties. The Maharajah Sawai Madho Singh used to invite royal dignitaries to this leisure palace, who usually rocked the ambiance with their adventure autobiographies. Jal Mahal is a five-story palace. The first four floors of this building is under water, only the top floor remains outside water arena. One can have a wonderful view of the lake and the palace from Nahargarh Fort. Opposite the palace are the cenotaphs of the royal family. One can enjoy the tranquil waters of the lake while sitting under the elaborately modeled and exquisitely carved balconies and arched roofs, thinking about the royal menus of the duck shooting parties. During winter months one can see large number of migratory birds at the lake. Visiting Lake can be a good experience for an ornithologist as a variety of species of birds has been spotted here during the winter season. And even for people interested in photography as the palace is flood lit every evening and it is a beautiful sight from the roadside pavement. This is the best time to use camera lenses. In the monsoons, it looks particularly startling with its red sandstone set against the water hyacinth filled lake. To the south of the lake, there are some alluring gardens and splendid examples of Rajput architectural style, waiting eagerly for the virgin footsteps of enthusiastic travelers. Rush to enjoy the out-of-the-world refreshing experience at the island palace, when cool breezes after kissing the waters, will rush to hug you. The best time to visit this palace is from October until March. Entry is not allowed but visitors can see the palace from roadside. There are no photography & video charges. |
